Long Bone: Hard Shell • The hard shell of the long bone is known as the cortical bone. • Because of its thickness and rigidity, it has the ability to resist bending • Its body is covered with periosteum, which is a thin vascular membrane-like layer • Inside the outer, hard shell is covered with endosteum • Both the endosteum and the periosteum play a major role in the growth and healing of the bone

Fractures • Comminuted Fractures – Occurs when an event like a traumatic crash result in the shattering of the bone. – It order for an injury to be classified as comminuted breakage must be complete and result in at least three bone fragments
