April 14, 2011 Consciousness : subjective awareness of experience. Unnecessary for many tasks. Automatic rather than consciously controlled processes are involved in most actions-explains why you can listen and type (or think about your day and walk home) at the same time-typing/walking home is automatic-well learned and requiring little conscious awareness to complete. Split Brain : if you sever the corpus collosum, the two hemispheres of the brain can no longer communicate with one another. Sometimes it is necessary to sever the corpus collosum to treat severe epilepsy. Split-brain patients tell us about the possibility of having two distinct conscious minds in one body. Because the right hemisphere is often mute, patients will engage in “cross- cueing” by gesture. The left hemisphere as interpreter of information (can tell a story to try to make sense of the right hemisphere’s action) Hemispheres show contralateral organization -Left: control motor on the right side of the body. Gets input from right visual field and from right ear -Right: controls motor on the left side of the body. Gets input from left visual field and from left ear. Left Hemisphere is specialized for: -spoken language/grammar -motor on the right side of the body Right Hemisphere specialized for: -spatial relations/emotions -motor on the left side of the body Aphasia vs. aprosody If the front left hemisphere is damaged, the patient gets aphasia and cannot speak words. If the front right hemisphere is damaged, the patient gets aprosody in which they cannot express emotion in vocal tone. Sensation
