April 12, 2011 Biological Bases: The Brain Neurons in Concert-we spoke of the single neuron to neuron communication, but trillions of neurons work together. Nervous System: Neurons in Functional Organizations Peripheral nervous system : somatic (info to and from muscles joints and skin) and autonomic (internal organs and glands). Autonomic Nervous System : sympathetic-fight or flight-heart rate goes up, vasoconstriction. This is no longer always adaptive (psychological stress and heart disease. Parasympathetic-rest and digest-heart rate goes down, vasodilation, increase digestion. Central Nervous System Spinal cord : “go between” brain and peripheral nervous system, also some basic motor reflexes. Brainstem : connects the spinal cord and brain. Houses basic “programs” of survival (ex: breathing, swallowing, mating). Automatic functions of body. Reticular formation : spread through lower and middle brainstem. Important for sleep/wake/consciousness. Damage=coma Medulla : heartbeat, circulation and respiration. Damage=death
