May 9, 2011 Sociology of Gender Word of the Day inherent: existing in something as a permanent attribute or quality; forming an element especially a characteristic or essential element of something; belonging to the intrinsic nature of that which is spoken of Are men and women different, or are they the same? Basic terminology sex : set of biological differences in a species that are related to reproduce. These differences typically fall into two main categories: male and female Gender : set of beliefs, feelings and behaviors associated with being male or female Gender identity : person’s psychological and emotional sense of identification with being male or female Gender ideology : normative ideas about what is “appropriate” for men versus women Essentialism : idea that gender is rooted in natural or biological differences between men and women Sociologists argue that gender is not given by nature or biology; it is deeply shaped by society.
