3/30/11 Historical Materialism Word of the Day: Epiphenomenon : something that appears in addition or a secondary symptom What is the engine of history? (What causes social change?) Technology, “great” people, ordinary people making things happen What about great ideas? Ideas can change the world (freedom, equality) Hegelian Idealism Main point: Ideas are at the root of what causes history and society to change. Called ‘idealism’ because it comes from ideas. The Dialectic: process of historical change Begins with a thesis and this leads to the antithesis. But there is also a third idea which emerges: the synthesis. The dialectical process is the back and forth amongst the thesis, antithesis and synthesis. Historical Materialism Main Point: Ideas are a product of one’s society. Ideas follow the economy. Underlying economic system gave rise to ideas of capitalism. Marx, “Life is not determined by consciousness, but consciousness by life.” Historical and social change is driven by class struggle.
