Sociology 2001 – Section 2: Introduction to Sociology Instructor : Brett Lehman, MA Email : [email protected] Phone : 578-1117 Office : Stubbs 22 (basement) Office hours : 2-3pm MWF and by appointment Classroom location and time : Lockett 15 from 11:40 – 12:30 on MWF Required Textbook : “Sociology” 13 th Edition by John J. Macionis Course Description and Advice : Sociology can be one of the more interesting subjects a college student can study, but sociology goes far beyond “common sense” that it has a reputation for being. Learning how to view other people, social life, and social issues from a sociological perspective can involve seriously challenging the beliefs you may have about why people do the things that they do and about how the world works. Through our discussion of various topics that are studied in sociology a significant theme of the course will be about challenging those beliefs in order to open up new ways of viewing other people, social life, and social issues. At times we will discuss controversial and sensitive issues that may offend some people however that is part of the exercise that we have to go through to learn about sociology. In order to have the most productive learning environment we all must respect everyone in our class even if their opinions differ from ours. Ultimately you will find out that there is not necessarily a “right” or “wrong” to every social issue we discuss. The most important thing to take away from this course is the ability to use a sociological perspective to understand more about the world we live in. To succeed in this goal I recommend that you read the suggested readings listed later in the syllabus and
