ArQule, Amicus, Lecukosite, TakTiX, ADispel, iFyber, Magainin Pharmaceuticals o Commercialized cartilage from shark fin - many startups have technical or scientific advisory boards o you look at their website under management/etc. o can find their backgrounds, what they might contribute to the company - VCs employed some of the earliest SABs o Amgen; KPCB, Asset Management Company, USVP o Independent technology review; “kick the scientific tires” o VCs recruit expert scientists and pay them to go on psych visits; interview scientists and write reports about the venture capitalists. - why create a scientific advisory board? o Besides “window dressing” to attract investors… o Gain access to valuable expertise o Provide competitive advantage o Reduce technology risk
