DEFEATING DRUG ADDICTION Jeff Mabry English 1101 Turlington “People say old habits are hard to break” People say old habits are hard to break and I agree completely. I grew up in an upper middle class home in Forsyth county, my parents had divorced and remarried and life was rather easy going, yet I had a problem with it. It was extremely boring. I was involved in sports since I could walk and was good at anything I dedicated myself to, only after the sport season ended did life become repetitive, and I needed to spice it up. I began drinking in eighth grade and continue to this day but this is just the first skip of my skipping stone story. Years went by and alcohol was all I needed to keep my life interesting enough to save my sanity. Drugs were nothing new to me, half my friends were junkies but that just was not me. One day that changed however, I was depressed after breaking up with one of my many short

lived relationships and needed something I could do at school and work to take my mind off things. One of my good friends and co-worker invited me over to smoke some marijuana before we departed for another grueling day at the dead beat grocery store. Ambitious to try something new I agreed, and it was amazing. The feeling of just complete overwhelming good energy rushed through my body and I never wanted it to stop. After the first time smoking I knew I would like to do it again, so my friend and I indulged in the thick hazy smoke before every shift. This is when I realized there might be a problem with this; you don’t give an addictive substance
