Jeff Mabry June 11 th , (0 miles): It was the first day of practice and I didn’t know what to expect. 7:00 am. and I’m a zombie trying to wake up, sitting there half asleep half awake as coach greeted the new comers to the sport and gave the popular “we strive to be the greatest” speech. Once we are all situated coach hands us our workouts, Day 1: seven mile run, my first thought is “shit, shoot me.” The rest of the month was standard seven-nine mile runs, and coach said these were the easy practices. This was my wake up call to the sport known as Cross Country, the most physically and mentally demanding experience I had ever endured. I had lost 10 lbs. of excess weight I didn’t think existed, my breathing after a long run was slow and peaceful instead of frantic and hard. My body was adjusting to what I needed it to do, and I loved the feeling of overcoming challenges. Our first race was in two weeks and I was completely prepared to show everyone that I would make varsity for the #3 team in Georgia. August 9
