28/11/2007 13:05:00 Basic argument Humans are born into “cultured” environments to live successfully in such environments, they need to fit in basic question: what drives acquisition? o Individual minds impose constraints on what is acquired o Pleistocene culture o Pleistocene environment Alternative renditions of evolution Evolution at the individual level o Individuals evolve: genes are slowly and constantly changing, and they  result from adaptations to Pleistocene environments (Modularity) o Individuals are predisposed to transmit culture, in ways that resonate  with the genetically specified Pleistocene psychology (Pedagogy) Evolution at the population level o Cultures maintain traditions, values, and beliefs that are adaptive to the  present  environment (Functionalism) o Cultures simply evolve: cultural forms are constantly changing, some  spread and survive, others die out (Memetics) Culture is adaptive solution to present problems Basic premises of the “individual level” accounts Our brains are the product of selection forces working on Pleistocene humans In order to define these brains, we have to characterize the problems  Pleistocene human ancestors faced
