Psyc317 Lec 3 Notes: Cultural Psychology 18/10/2007 20:52:00 Properties of culture System of meanings (symbols, beliefs, values, artifacts, practices) Somewhat coherent Implicit and explicit to different extents Somewhat shared by a group of individuals, what they take as a given, as  common sense, shared cultural knowledge o Explicit code of meanings: like laws that regulate behavior in your  culture o Intention of person o Context of situation o Then determine meaning Implicit cues are what require you to apply your intuitive understanding Transmitted from one generation to the next with relative fidelity themes illustrated in Babel (movie clip) Triandis’s cultural syndromes o Tightness vs. loosemess o Collectivism vs. individualism Coherent system of beliefs, values, pattern of behaviors o Warm social relations, generalized personal effects, emotionality o (when you start taking things personally   emotionality) communication across cultures o joking, power relations, role definitions Geertz’s thick description o We interpreted things that weren’t said or shown Challenges of a psychology of culture
