Cgsc201 Lec 19 Notes 08/11/2007 14:35:00 Prefrontal cortex 1: Overview and Role of the Ventromedial Prefrontal Cortex in  the Regulation of Emotion and Social Behavior Prefrontal cortical function Inhibiting inappropriate emotions Regulate attention, sustaining it Allowing us to plan and organize Working memory: ability to keep in mind an event that just happened or bring to  mind information from long term memory stores, and use that information to  guide behavior through and affect In other words, the ability to use representational knowledge in an executive  manner  Prefrontal cortex in memory o Important for retrieving information o Hold information, often having to manipulate or protect it o PFC needs hippocampus for delays longer than 20 seconds Especially when there are distractions Use info to guide attention Guide actual motor responses (overt behaviors)
