Learning Disability Paper I do not have any firsthand experience dealing with a learning disability, so all of this information presented to me is new. First, I learned that a learning disability can be defined as a disorder in which one or more of the basic psychological processes involved in understanding or using language, spoken or written, which may manifest itself in an imperfectability to listen, speak, read, write, spell, or do math. LD covers a broad range of academic topics, but one common thread that remains the same is the trouble in processing information. I did find it interesting, however, that of all the children in special education classes due to LD, 90% are seen for reading disabilities. Learning disabilities are diagnosed by taking two tests and comparing the scores. The first is an IQ test to determine the intelligence level of the individual. Next, is an ability/achievement test in different subject areas. Scores from the above tests are compared, and if there is a large discrepancy between IQ score and ability/achievement

Causes of LD can include acquired trauma, pregnancy complications, genetics, biochemical influences (such as drugs), and minority socio-economic status. Regardless of the struggles individuals with learning disabilities face, many strive for a better education, and overcome obstacles that may prohibit that. There is a 57% graduation rate for students with LD, and almost 3 million students aged 16-21 have a learning disability. Impressively, over 40,000 students with LD attend four-year colleges, in which they must meet the same entrance requirements (such as SAT scores, GPA rankings, etc.) that students without learning disabilities do.
