Precis 4 This research article presents a correlation study where scientists believe they have found a link between reading and learning disabilities and language impairments. The article points out that a research team, led by Mabel Rice from the University of Kansas, has found that a gene on chromosome 6 contributes to language impairment, as well as speech impairment. They study claims that language ability involves vocabulary and grammar whereas speech involves the accuracy of sound production. Since both language and grammar are involved in an individual’s ability to read, when one or the other is off, then reading cannot be done correctly. Researchers are confident that this one specific gene could be the culprit because previous research has been done concluding that Chromosome 6 is a factor in Speech Sounds Disorder (SSD) and Reading Disability/Dyslexia (RD). Although it is not quite clear what the exact biological mechanisms involved in the disabilities are, researchers have taken a step towards
