Precis 9 In this article, the differences in gender communication are noted as to how they can affect a relationship between a man and a woman. The author claims that women are more sensitive to meanings that lie “in between the lines” than men are. Women also communicate more on the side of intimacy and emotions, while men’s communication is more centered on status. Additionally, deciphering meanings in everyday rapport in a relationship can be difficult between men and women due to what they expect a relationship to be. The author proposes that women expect relationships to be based on interdependence and mutual cooperation. On the other hand, men usually expect relationships to be based on independence and competition. The author looks at one research example in which a man says, “I’m really tired. I have so much work to do – I don’t know how I’m going to get it done!” In response, the female replies “Me, too. There just aren’t enough hours in the day!”
