2 Family and Marriage 1. How does American society define family, parenting, childhood, and happiness? The society of American describes family from different perspectives theoretically such as symbolic interactionism and functional conflict. From a functional perspective, the family part work to function three critical functions: to utilize as a source of practical and emotional stability, to adjust reproduction and sexual experiences, and to interact children. It is critical to socialize children and also increasing the number of functional participants to society. The entire family is normally concern in socialization starting from birth. The siblings also help by engaging socially with their siblings by feeding them and playing with them. The family is who in charge for all of the emotional needs. It involves clothing, water, education, shelter, and other abstract and physical needs humans necessitate for a well-balanced life. They all aid one another by furnishing those needs. The dispute perspective of family declare that the family part put up to social inequalities by strengthen negative aspects of society socially. As a source of conflicts, the family also serves between its particular people, both emotionally and physically. The symbolic interactionism view explores how family parts work, how members act in the midst of themselves. Jennifer Senior, TED talk speaker brings the family part from both a symbolic and functional perspective. According to her, American parents nowadays grasp a distinctive role within the family. Previously in the past, children were depended as a source of income, meanwhile their parents will work to provide the care needed such as shelter, food and education (functional perspective).
3 Since the parents don’t know what the future would look like for their children in the modern age, they try to arrange their children’s future by making them do some extracurricular activities. She describes childhood as a portion of time of work for the children. This would be the type of jobs that would bring some source of income for their family such as physical work in a factory. Jennifer Senior also convey the idea of happiness. She stated that matrimonial satisfaction is a low point pursuing childbearing, and the parents themselves don’t grade the interaction with their children as a positive experience also known as symbolic interactionism perspective. She notices that majority of parent’s goal is to make sure that their children are happy. Despite all this, However, happiness is not a tangible objective. Happiness is a response to favorable events.
