CSC 520 Computer Architecture Trememdous increases in computer performance over the last few decades. During the first 25 years of electronic computers ~ 25% per year With the advent of VLSI and microprocessors in the late 1970, this performance increase jumped to ~ 35 % per year. In the early 1980s, RISC based computer raised the performance bar, other architectures had to keep up or disappear (Vax ) Figure 1.1 shows that the combination of architectural and organizational enhancements led to an unprecedented 50% performance growth rate over a 16 year period in the late 20 th Century. Since 2002, this growth rate has slowed to about 20% per year: limits of power available instruction level parallelism memory latency

CSC 520 Computer Architecture The effect of this dramatic performance growth rate in the 20 th century has been twofold: First: It has significantly enhanced the capability available to computer users: GUI for example For many applications, the highest performance microprocessors of today outperform the supercomputer of 10 years ago. Second: The dramatic performance increase has led to the dominance of microprocessor- Based computers across the entire range of computer design. Minicomputers which were traditionally made from off-the-shelf logic have been replaced by servers made using microprocessors. Mainframes have been almost replaced with multiprocessors consisting of small numbers of off-the-shelf microprocessors. Even high-end supercomputers are being built with collections of microprocessors.
