Psyc317 Lec 5 Notes: Methodological issues  18/10/2007 21:17:00 Hermeneutic circle Culture consists of symbols and meanings Symbols and meanings by definition interpretation one gives to symbols and meanings is influenced – if not  determined – by one’s own cultural symbols and meanings therefore, in the interpretation of culture cannot be done ‘objectively’ coping with the hermeneutic circle 1.) embrace (e.g. Geertz, post-modern approach)  o culture is not a factor to be explained or that explains o culture is to be described – thickly – in synergy with psych o one should focus on the detail, the specific, the local, and guess at  meanings o progress is measured not by how our concepts can be generalized, but  by our capacity to think through the concepts rather, how “deep” the stories are  assessing how well people argue with you
