Functional Modeling (15 minutes) Metacafe.com has an interesting video entitled “How to Make an Amazing Glowing Ice Bulb.” The first step is to take an LED (Light Emitting Diode), two wires, and electrical tape and attach the wires to the LED . The output of this step is called the LED assembly. The next step is to take this assembly and a balloon and stuff the LED into the balloon . The output of this step is called the balloon assembly. The third step is to take tap water and fill the balloon with water and tie a knot in the balloon. The output of this step is called the water-filled balloon assembly. The fourth step is to put this water-filled balloon assembly into the freezer (a resource) and freeze it. The water temperature would form a feedback loop in this step. The output of this step is called an ice-filled balloon assembly. The fifth step is to remove the balloon rubber . The video says “Hot water helps” in this step so hot water may be considered to be a useful resource. It would also be valid to think of it as an input, since it supplies energy. The output of this step is the ice bulb. The last step is to take the ice bulb and batteries and to attach the batteries and behold the magic! The output of this last step is an amazing glowing ice bulb. Apart from the temperature feedback control, it does not appear as if this process has any noteworthy decisions or constraints.
