Psyc317 Lec 7 Notes: Relationships 25/10/2007 22:38:00 Attachment and bonding Due to human infants’ level of immaturity, a bond w/ a mature caregiver is  necessary for survival Infants seek proximity Ultimately, infants dev. Mental representation of the bond that allows them to  uninhibitedly and autonomously explored and interact w/ the environment Strange situation paradigm Parent and child are alone in a new room Child explores room while parent observes Stranger enters room, talks to parent and then approaches the child Parent quietly leaves the room Parent returns and comforts child Attachment styles Secure: child explores room checking back @ parent, is comfortable with the  stranger, does not get distressed when parent leaves, greet the parent  warmly on return Resistant/anxious/ambivalent – child stays close to parent, is suspicious of  stranger, becomes very distressed when parent leaves, is not easily  comforted
