PHYSICS HONORS LAB: CENTRIPETAL ACCELERATION Materials: accelerometer, CBL unit, meter stick, plastic tube, tape, stopwatch Procedure: 1) Connect the accelerometer to the CBL. Make sure the accelerometer cable passes through the plastic tube. Start the EASYDATA program. 2) Grasp the accelerometer and hold it against the table. Slide the accelerometer forward (in the direction of the arrow) quickly and suddenly. Note the acceleration displayed on the calculator screen. 3) Repeat Step #2 but slide the accelerometer backward. 4) Adjust the accelerometer cable so that there is a 50- cm length of the cable between the center of the accelerometer box and the end of the plastic tube. Place a small piece of tape on the cable near the end of the plastic tube. 5) Hold the plastic tube upright, with one hand grasping the plastic tube and the other hand grasping the accelerometer cable below the plastic tube. Swing the apparatus around so that the accelerometer circles the top of the plastic tube. 6) Note the target speed assigned to your group. Calculate the amount of time that would be needed for the accelerometer to complete one revolution if it were moving at the target speed. Multiply that number by ten. This is the target time.
