Lab Instructions Chapter 4 Part One Materials: various masses CBL with calculator lab cart C-clamp wooden block photogate with wheel blue workbook armor orange string Directions: 1) Be sure the wooden block is clamped to the end of your table, with the photogate assembly inserted into the hole and connected to the CBL. 2) In the first set of trials, everyone will be using the same amount of mass, but each group will have a different amount of mass hanging from the orange string. Follow the instructions on the board in placing masses on the cart and connecting masses to the string. 3) Activate the EASYDATA program, ready the cart, push “start”, and release the cart. Place the blue workbook on the ground below the string mass to cushion its fall. Use notebooks or your hands to control the cart at the end of its run. 4) After your first trial, look at the graphs of position, velocity, and acceleration vs. time generated by the calculator. Sketch these in your notes. 5) Repeat once. Determine the acceleration of the cart for each trial (by finding the slope of the graph or the mean value of all the acceleration measurements stored in the list). Determine the mean value of your two acceleration values. Write this number on the board in the appropriate spot. 6) In the second set of trials, everyone will have the same amount of mass hanging from the string and different amounts of mass riding along on the cart. Follow the instructions on the board in placing masses on the cart and connecting masses to the string. 7) Repeat steps 3, 4, and 5 above. What you need to have: Sketches of position, velocity, and acceleration graphs for one trial.
