20:13 Chapter 5: Race, Ethnicity, and Families Racial-Ethnic Groups Race is much more than physical traits Race is a social construct- subject to change as needed Time and history do play a part in what is  and  is not considered a race Race is a physical trait, ex: skin color Ethnicity is your culture and ancestry Racial-ethnic group - people who share a common identity and whose members think  of themselves as distinct from others by virtue of ancestry, culture, and sometimes  physical characteristics. Social creations that change as society sees fit United states is structured around 5 racial-ethnic groups African- Americans Hispanics Asian and Pacific Islanders Native Americans Non-Hispanic whites

“Umbrella” terms/categories Hispanic : refers to persons in the US who trace their ancestry to Latin America and  Spain Separate from race because a Hispanic can be of any race Latino  is also used Asian American:  can include anyone from China to Pakistan to Hawaii. They are more  different from the Hispanic category because they can have different languages and  alphabets. Much more diverse With all of these different categories comes an emergence of  pan nationalities. They marry into different distinct cultures and nationalities “Whiteness” as Ethnicity Whites make up the majority group in the U.S. population. Is “white” an ethnicity? Whiteness was not seen as an ethnicity it is more of a social construct because whites  have more power **”whiteness” is not an inherent characteristic of people*** (you are not automatically  “white”) you have to move up in the ranks of social class first African American Families
