No matter what adaptations species possess, all adaptations are designed for species to gain enough energy and survive long enough to reproduce. If species are not well adapted population numbers will decline until the species becomes extinct. 99% of all species who have inhabited this earth have become extinct. 2. There are 2 main ways that animals reproduce. A. Asexual reproduction occurs without the fusion of gametes. It usually is based only on mitosis. Offspring are identical to their parents. Types of asexual reproduction include: budding, binary fission, and parthenogenesis. Parthenogenesis is the production of new individuals by females from unfertilized eggs. Common in crustaceans and lizards. Parthenogenetic Cnemidophorus lizards from the southwestern US. . Sexual Reproduction- occurs with the fusion of gametes- large non-motile eggs with tiny motile sperm. Eggs and sperm result from mitosis and meiosis. Meiosis results in haploid gametes. The progeny from sexual reproduction are genetically different from themselves and their parents because of recombination.themselves and their parents because of recombination....
