A person (personal uncertainty) A relationship with a person (relational uncertainty) High personal uncertainty + Low relational uncertainty Don’t click with professor or boss, so you keep them at a distance Low personal uncertainty + High relational uncertainty With a new romantic partner, you like the person but are unsure of the future 7 Axioms Amount of Verbal Communication (-) Nonverbal Affiliative Expressiveness (-) Similarity (-) Info Seeking (+) Intimacy (-) Reciprocity (+) Liking (-) Amount of verbal communication  Uncertainty The more verbal communication that occurs, the less uncertain we are of others Once you talk to someone and get to know them, you will be more certain It is possible for uncertainty to remain unchanged or increased
