Aesthetics 1/25 Urmson Article - Independence of attributes o Can be mutually exclusive or not, dependent on connection o Relates aesthetics to “business associates and sporting association”, as they can be mostly one but can be other too - There is commonality between types of responses (aesthetic, moral, personal, intellectual, economic) - Model: o Appraisals of value- has good, bad, indifferent o What sets them apart is criteria of value (could be graceful to be aesthetic, cost effective to be economic, etc.) o Criteria How it appears: looks, sounds, tastes, or fels. What it appears to have, as non-aesthetic properties- fast-looking cars, cheerful sounding bird, it could LOOK top heavy. - Problems with Urmson’s model o Sensuous appearances are peripheral to literature- as the look of the words on the page aren’t what are aesthetic. o non aesthetic merits that cannot be directly determined for example, it’s money value, that fact could make it more aesthetically interesting
