Objectives - Be able to know what distinguishes Aves from other vertebrates - Know how foil birds contribute to understanding of evolution, looking at structural and functional differences - Know role of limbs and bill in diversification - Dial (2003) Review - Therapod dinosaurs -> archaeopteryx -> birds - Adaptations toward powered flight, which is energetically costly Taxonomy - Like KPCOFGS, but on top of that is the Domain (eukarya, prokaryote, archae) - Birds o Domain Eukarya o Kingdom Animalia o Phylum Chordata Subphylum Amniota o Class Aves o Order ~27 o Family ~190 o Genus ~2000 genera o Species ~10000 - Approximations are due to uncertainty over things we have yet to discover and disagreements in classification - Distinctive traits 1. Feathers 2. No Teeth 3. Bipedal and digitigrade (walk on toes) 4. Many fused bones 5. Pneumatic bones- connected air sacs 6. Small-bodied Up to 16kg, few spp >50 cm (spp =multiple species) 7. Forelimbs specialized for flight
