1 (plus a bit more Linux) A First Introduction to IRAF/ PyRAF Independent Projects: Key Dates Today: Project Proposal Due (20%) TAC Review: September 30 October 2: Deadline for Data Acquisition for Archival Projects December 3: Last Lab All data reduction and analysis (including making figures) should be done by this date December 15: Final Report Due You may submit drafts of the final report in advance if you want feedback. The turnaround time for me to get you comments is 1 week. These are the only hard deadlines. For the rest of the semester how you budget your time is up to you. I do however strongly advise you to start early because data reduction and analysis normally take significantly longer than you anticipate. FTP FTP stands for file transfer protocal You should have used this to get the HST data In case this was a problem, here’s how it should work. You get an email telling you to ftp retrieve your data via anonymous ftp from a server at STScI. To do so: % ftp SERVER_NAME.stsci.edu When asked for a login name, type “anonymous” When asked for a password, type your full astronomy department email address ( [email protected] ) At this point you are able to access files on the STScI computer. The email should tell you that the files are in a subdirectory of /stage, so cd to /stage/REST_OF_PATH. ftp> cd /stage/REST_OF_PATH ftp> bi ftp> ls ftp> get NAME_OF_FILE The command “bi” stands for binary and should be typed before transferring images. The get command retrieves the desired file across the network. If you have more than one file, you
