AST 4723 Lab 5: IDL Tutorial Objective: The purpose of the lab this week is for you to gain experience using IDL, learing the basic commands. IDL can be quite useful for generating quality figures and manipulating arrays of data. There are a number of useful resources for learning IDL. One important source of information is the help manual that is built directly into the software. Additionally, there are a number of useful online references. Specific recommended web pages include: The IDL Astronomy User’s Library http://idlastro.gsfc.nasa.gov/ Craig Warner’s IDL Guide http://www.astro.ufl.edu/~warner/IDL5220/ R.W. O’Connell’s Guide to IDL for Astronomers http://www.astro.virginia.edu/class/oconnell/astr511/IDLresources/IDLguide.html The first reference is the official web page for a suite of IDL astronomy utilities; the second is a fairly thorough introduction to IDL. The third, is a series of exercises from a graduate course that are designed to introduce you to using IDL in astronomy. Your objective this week is simple. You must write procedures to reproduce the figures shown at the end of this document using IDL, without using the gatorplot routines. To do
