Syllabus for AST 4723C Techniques of Observational Astronomy II Fall 2010 Course Information Instructor: Anthony Gonzalez TA: Amanda Townsend Office: 318 Bryant Office: 319 Bryant Email: Email: Phone: 392-2052 x233 Phone: 392-2052 x281 Office Hours: Tuesday 2:45-4:30pm Office Hours: Thursday 12:30-1:30pm Class Periods and Locations: Lecture: Tuesday 1:55-2:45pm in BRT 3 Lecture/Lab: Thursday 5:10-10:10pm in BRT 7 Required materials: A bound lab notebook (not a 3-ring binder). Bring your notebook to lab every week. Suggested References: Linux in a Nutshell (Siever) Linux Pocket Guide (Barrett) Fundamentals of Astronomy (C. Barbieri; chapters 16-17) Practical IDL Programming (Gumley) I have requested that these books be placed on reserve in Marston science library. Course web page: (click on AST4723C on menu) Grading Policy : The relative weighting of assignments in determining final grades is as follows. 25% Tutorials and Lab Exercises (Linux, IRAF, IDL, DS9, SM, Data Archives) 10% Imaging and Photometry Lab 10% Spectroscopy Lab 50% Independent Research Project 5% TAC Review Class participation and additional analysis beyond the stated requirements will be considered as a basis for extra credit.
