1.2 Approaches to the Third World Politics 23:25 Steven Harper- gov’t in court working it’s way through Ontario case filed a brief  saying even though provinces had been issuing licenses to same sex couples not  from Canada, couldn’t divorce because they hadn’t been married in the first place  (even though they had certificates)- either weren’t married or home jurisdiction  considered them married still couldn’t divorce…. Extraordinarily surprised if that survives court system; charter of rights- how  would you get married and it wouldn’t count? US restored relations in Myanmar/burma-  Reuters  had a good report on how it  happened Looney American who tried to swim across a lake- increased relations?  Diplomatic context o Burmese got concerned about heavy Chinese investment in their econ;  encouraging US to take a different attack on their influence o Burma allowed US to fly relief assistance in during the hurricane?  o Need to open borders to trade and investment  o China not opposed to diversification  **test case of how a whole series of unrelated int’l events can all come together  in a way that makes a certain policy occur in certain types of ways  o Accidental factors can enable diplomatic betterment  Iranians sentenced to death an ex-marine and videogame developed (US) as a spy Computer games in which you either go after Iranian targets- may have been  a coincidence; US rescued  Israelis false-flagging recruitment Iranians to engage pretending to be  Americans Iranians believe some of those planting bombs were American spies when  really they were Israeli mussad DNS listings so you can’t find websites? Cost of online piracy- fairly draconian and devolves a great deal of  enforcement to individual internet providers and criminalizes people  unintentionally  Backlash has been fairly heavy in tech sector and segment of public opinion  (young adults with terrible voter turnout)

US engaged in assassination? Go after specific terrorists but not after scientists  in other countries….much more likely to be Israelis than Americans; might have  shared info with Israelis but it maybe not with intention of assassination  Unlikely though not impossible that assassins are paid members of an  assassin service because you wouldn’t use your own personnel for fear of  them getting arrested because it would be a major political disaster What does (most of) the developing world have in common? A.k.a Why do  we lump together all of developing world? Must share relevant  commonality….
