One of the major challenges facing family businesses is managing the tension between work and family systems (Beehr, Drexler, & Faulkner, 1997; Foley & Powell, 1997; The work - / family tension that family business owners experience is also likely to influence the way that these owners view work - family conflicts facing non-family employees, although anecdotal evidence suggests that there is uncertainty about how supportive family business owners are of non-family employees in resolving these conflicts, especially when compared to non-family-owned businesses. 238 On the one hand, family-owned businesses are viewed as ‘preserving the humanity of the workplace’ (Davis, 1983, p. 53). In this view, family-owned businesses are seen as having higher levels of concern for individuals than non-family-owned businesses. Supporting this is a belief that non-family employees may ‘relish the opportunity to work in a family company because it is more value-driven than profit-driven’ (Collins & Lazier, 1995, p. 142). On the other hand, many family business owners are used to making family sacrifices for the good of the business (Kets de Vries, 1996). Recent research suggests that when there is a conflict between work and family systems facing family businesses owners, the accommodation is generally made by the family rather than the business (Miller et al., 2000).
