Strategy formulation: process of deciding on a strategic direction by defining a company’s mission and goals, its external opportunities and threats, and its internal strengths and weaknesses. (deciding where you want to go) vs strategy implementation (p.75): Process of devising structures an allocating resources to enact the strategy a company has chosen. (deciding how to get to where you want to go) Linkages of strategic planning and HRM (diagram on page 79): Administrative Linkage: (lowest level) HRM focuses on day-to-day activities. Engages in administrative work unrelated to the company’s core business needs. One-Way Linkage: The firm’ strategic business planning function develops the strategic plan then informs the HRM function of the plan.
