The stories that we tell ourselves about the past have profound implications for the ways that we understand the present, our relationships to one another, and the principles by which we distribute power, privilege, and opportunity in our society. We’ll explore this idea in a short exercise built around the life of Wilson Caldwell, once a slave and later an employee of the University. Background: Wilson Caldwell was born into slavery in 1841. He lived to experience the Civil War, emancipation, Reconstruction, and the opening years of North Carolina’s industrial revolution. Wilson was the son of November Caldwell, a slave who had been faculty member Joseph Caldwell's coachman, and Rosa Burgess, a slave belonging to University President David Lowry Swain. In 1853, when he was twelve years old, young Caldwell began working for Thomas Paxton, an English gardener who had been hired to beautify the campus. Eight years later, "he was
