1 Chapter 1 ANSWERS TO QUESTIONS RQ3. The difference is that in longitudinal waves the motion of the medium is parallel to the direction of wave travel, while in transverse waves the motion of the medium is perpendicular to the direction of wave travel. A sound wave in air is longitudinal wave. A wave on a rope shaken up and down at one end is transverse wave. RQ6. The slope of a graph of position versus time is equal to the speed. QTD3. Due to existence of atmosphere on the earth, the falling balls will encounter air resistance besides gravity. Because the baseball has less mass and less gravity, the air resistance will have bigger fraction with respect to the gravity. Hence, the base ball will be slower than the iron ball during the falling process, and the iron ball will strike the ground sooner. (For experts: If we denote the air resistance as air F , then the acceleration will be: m F g m F mg a air air ! = !
