1 Physics 198, Physics of Music Laboratory 9 Name ____________________________ Partner(s) __________________________________________ This laboratory uses computer analysis of sound to investigate the spectra of real instruments and the human voice. If you didn’t bring an instrument, please try one of the Physics and Astronomy Department instruments, or ask your neighbor to play it for the first part of the lab. We all have voices for the second part. Since you will be analyzing your own instruments and voices, each of you may wish to keep a copy of the lab report. Equipment: Each table should have a Dell Optiplex 620 Computer equipped with SpectraPlus sound analysis software interfaced to a USB audio interface box (M-Audio, FastTrack) connected to a good microphone (Shure MD58). A sound level meter should also be at each table. There is a single printer interfaced to all computers via a wireless network. The Physics and Astronomy Department musical instruments should be available. There should also be a bottle of “Mighty Mist” or equivalent for
