The high temperature, stability, and relatively inert Ar environment eliminate much of the interference encountered with flames. However, the plasma instrument costs more to purchase and operate than a flame instrument. 20-5. Doppler effect is when an atom moving toward the radiation source experiences more oscillations of the electromagnetic wave in a given time period than one moving away from the source. As temperature gets greater, the Doppler linewidth increases, for T is at the numerator. As mass gets smaller, the Doppler linewidth also increases, for M is at the denominator. 20-8. The Lanthanum ions will decrease the extent of ionization of analyte, because Lanthanum is more easily ionized by hydroxyapatite. 20-15.
