Tien Wei (Tom) Lee SID: 21846711 Chem 15 Lab Lab Section 101 GSI: Jamie Kulp Prelab Assignment Experiment 7: Quantitative analysis of a solution containing cobalt and copper 1. 1-C, 2-D, 3-A, 4-E, 5-B 2. Stationary phase: AG 1-X8 resin Mobile phase: HCl solution 3. The anion-exchange resin is an insoluble organic polymer containing cation groups that attract and hold anions present in a surrounding solution in exchange for anions previously held. 4. Obtain an unknown solution from the stockroom. Collect the eluent in a waste beaker, and continue adding 3 M HCl until the blue-green band of cobalt approaches the bottom of the column. Clamp the plastic ion exchange column in a vertical position, plug the outlet, and add a slurry of the AG 1-X8 resin in 3 M HCl to the column let the resin settle into a bed at the bottom of the column. use a vacuum apparatus to draw out the excess acid to just above the top of the slurry. repeat until the settled column of resin is approximately to the 17- 19 ml mark
