Was Rocky trying to escape her problems when she partied with the band and used drugs? What does Rocky’s decision to keep Venus symbolize? Overall themes: The story revolved around the cultural clash a Filipino-American girl named Rocky experienced in her years after moving to New York. Rocky was neither able to completely give up her Filipino identity nor fully accept herself as an American. On top of this drifting between the two cultures, the main character lived a life with on particular direction. The “Gangster of Love” band she started further complicated her problems.
