Katherine Lau BUAD 304 Section 14723 Judy Tolan Assignment 1 September 18, 2009 Chapter 4 Case Incident 1: The Rise of the Nice CEO? 1. Do you think Sutton is wrong and that the contrasting fortunes and personalities of Nardelli, McNerney, and Immelt are coincidental? Why or why not? I agree with Sutton that the personalities and fortunes of these three CEO’s were not at all coincidental. The CEO of a company is a guiding the light and motivating force for the direction a company takes. With a CEO like Nardelli, his negativity could only produce negativity and less motivated individuals in the workplace, leading to his eventual downfall. Whereas McNerney or Immelt are both conscious of the impact their attitudes have on the company as a whole. Their willingness to value the individual and make their employees feel important and qualified improves performance and encourages them to work harder and catapult the company into success. 2. Do you think the importance of being “nice” varies by industry or type of job? How so? There are some jobs where being nice is not always the best approach when it comes to working. However, within the workplace, people should feel confident in their abilities and inspired to work hard. These feelings are a direct result from their interactions with others and
