Unformatted text preview: BUAD 304: Leading Organizations Lecture Session #5 Leader as Structural Architect Leader as Maker of Culture Organizational Culture w A system of shared meaning held by members that distinguishes the organization from other organizations n Serves as a roadmap; shows members how they should think, feel, behave, etc. Seven Primary Characteristics of Org. Culture (can be high or low on each characteristic) w Innovation & risk-taking (creativity and risk-taking are encouraged) w Attention to detail (members are expected to show precision, analysis, and attention to detail) w Outcome orientation (management focuses on outcomes rather than techniques/processes) w People orientation (management considers how decisions will affect members) w Team orientation (work is primarily done in teams) w Aggressiveness (people are aggressive and competitive) w Stability (pursuit of status quo, rather than growth/change) Organizational Culture: Why Does it Matter? w It affects organizational performance n Can improve performance and help people do their jobs effectively l Innovation, toughness, niceness, etc. l Serves as a guide for behavior (efficient) n Can reduce performance and prevent people from doing their jobs effectively l Blaming, fear, competition, etc. l Hinders success of mergers and acquisitions Organizational Culture: Why Does it Matter? w It affects individual performance and satisfaction n Find a work culture that fits your style and preferences (e.g., hawks vs. doves) n Be aware of culture when switching from one org. to another (often major differences) Video: Boot Camp Nightmare Questions w In what ways is boot camp used to establish a culture? w What is the culture? What purpose does this culture serve the military? w Are there similarities between a business culture and the culture of the military? If so, what are they?
