Walden, by Henry David Thoreau Readings in American Life Christian Yimgnia Where I lived, and What I lived For At the beginning of the reading, Thoreau recalls the several places where he nearly settled before selecting Walden Pond, all of them estates on a rather large scale. He quotes the Roman philosopher Cato’s warning that it is best to consider buying a farm very carefully before signing the papers. Thoreau is very delighted to be a home owner and proudly describes that environment he lived in. I think the title of this reading summarizes the purpose of writing for the author. I believe Thoreau wanted to show that his life is really meaningful and people should not only live to sustain themselves financially but their sole should play a part in reality. The Conclusion This final chapter was very passionate. He criticizes conformity: if a man does not keep pace with his companions, perhaps it is because he hears a different drummer. Let him step to the music which he hears, however measured or far away. By doing so, men may find happiness and self-fulfillment. Thoreau gives so many instructive ideas about making your life better. Life is a blessing and everyone should love it. His relationship with the audience becomes more intense in this chapter and it really shows his motivation to mobilize us to start working to live our lives differently....
