ENGR 126 Design Project Fall 2008 Introduction to the Design Project Scenario . In March 2008, Purdue University hosted the Indiana Assoc. of Physical Plant Administrators (IAPPA) Conference. Sustainability—the effective use of energy and adopting green practices—was one topic of focus at the conference. The conference website stated, “Students concerned about the environment are providing an impetus to get our schools to adopt green practices.” 1 One of the conference sessions was a panel discussion regarding the American Colleges and Universities President’s Climate Commitment (ACUPCC)—a high-visibility effort to address global warming by neutralizing greenhouse gas emissions. 2 Presidents signing the Commitment pledge to eliminate their campuses’ greenhouse gas emissions over time by: Completing an emissions inventory. Within two years, setting target dates for interim milestones. Taking short-term, immediate steps to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Integrating sustainability into the curriculum and the educational experience. Making the action plan, inventory, and progress reports publicly available. In spite of hosting the conference, Purdue University is not yet a signatory to the Commitment (signatories include the presidents of Ball State University, Indiana State University, and Rose- Hulman Institute of Technology), but involvement by Purdue staff at the IAPPA conference and by Purdue students in ENGR 126 can help make sustainability part of the educational experience
