To: Residents of Purdue University Re: Sustainability in the Dorms Our engineering team has decided to implement a plan to save electricity, water, money, and the environment. We are writing to you because not only you can benefit from this, but also the best way to save energy use for electricity, heating and water is by addressing the use by the direct user, you. The way that we feel that it should be accomplished to save electricity is by telling the residents to only use the overhead lighting in the rooms at night. During the day the residents can open the blinds and let natural light in. This proposed use of less lighting, according to the GE energy calculator, can result in about 51% less energy used, based on two sixty watt bulbs being used for nine hours instead of seventeen hours. Another way to save money is by addressing heating costs. The best way to save money on heating is by turning down the thermostat, and placing an insulation strip underneath the door. Based on the Energy Information Administration’s homepage, if a person would lower their thermostat just one degree Fahrenheit, the person could save about five percent in energy usage. A weather strip from Thermwell Frost King, available at http://www.hardwareandtools.com, only cost $2.29 for two doors. That means that a room with two people would only have $0.57 per person. In order to save water, we would want the residents to take a five to ten minute showers at the most. By implementing these three ways of saving energy, this would help to lower the cost for energy for
