Louis XIV – determined to be the sole ruler of France, eliminated threat of high nobility by removing them from royal council and replacing with new aristocrats he could control. He restructured the central policy-making machinery of government. He dominated his ministers and secretaries, giving him monarchical power. Peter the Great – produced the first Russian Navy. Reorganized central government of Russia, hoped to create a “police state” or a well ordered community governed in accordance with law. Wanted to gain control of the Russian Orthodox church, introduced western customs to Russia. Women benefited greatly, allowing them to involve themselves in social things with men. Ottoman Turks – Grew to be a huge power encroaching on Europe, tried to capture Vienna, but failed, repulsed by a mix of European armies. Took Constantinople, renamed it Istanbul Columbian Exchange- an exchange of people, plants, animals, disease between natives and Europeans.
