Nick Poggetti Short Essay 1 Marriage: Then and Now Stephanie Coontz Stephanie Coontz is the author of the Introductory Reading for our course. She is a teacher of history and family studies at the Evergreen State College in Washington and has many publications that have earned her accolades for excellent writing. Many of her publications, including this one, have to do American families and marriage and how they have been changing over the years and how to adapt to these changes. The experience that Coontz is trying to describe in her article, “Marriage: Then and Now” deals with the evolution of marriage as a relationship starting as early the beginning as last millennium leading all the way up to today. She speaks of, like the title suggests, how marriage was and what it has developed into: “I say revival of shared breadwinning because in some ways, today’s two-earner marriages represent a return to more traditional marital patterns, after a short historical interlude that many people mistakenly identify as traditional.” (Koontz, 3) This quote
