Comments Page 1 Comments - Ratings by Lookup The Data worksheet in this example contains a simple column of numbers in the Values column. The aim is to associate with each number a rating - say "very high", "high", "middle", etc. Perhaps these numbers are scores on some kind of test, for example. It is possible to do this using an if function - but if there are many ratings categories the if function becomes very unwieldy. In fact nested if functions have a limit of about 7 functions. The better way to do this is to use a LOOKUP function. You need to construct separately the data that the function will "look up". In this case you need a table of numbers defining the boundaries of the ratings along with the associated rating. The LOOKUP function takes a value from the Data worksheet (call it the search value) and searches

Unformatted text preview: for that value in the boundary values that you have put in the lookup table. If it finds the value (i.e. the value happens to be an actual boundary value) the function returns the associated rating, and if it doesn't find it the function returns the rating associated with the largest boundary value that is less than the search value. After you have built the lookup table and the formula be sure to experiment with it so that you fully understand the description in the previous paragraph of how the function works.
