DUE: FRIDAY FEB 10TH, 2012 This is the final homework for chapter # 1. There are two non-book questions and 4 book questions this week. (1) (7pts) Recall the Aeropress Coffee and Espresso maker shown in class and in figure 1. Answer the following questions, and clearly state any assumptions you make (assume that for the condition being examined, the aeropress is 2/3 full of coffee and 1/3 full of air as shown in the diagram. Also assume that the amount of fluid is constant inside the piston chamber.): (a) Calculate the approximate volume of air and coffee if the absolute pressure inside the piston chamber is atmospheric pressure. 1 2 DUE: FRIDAY FEB 10TH, 2012 (2) (3pts) A fun demonstration of surface tension is to put a circular loop of string on a water surface. The string will rest on the surface due to surface tension (figure 2). After the string has settled, a small amount of soap is dropped inside the loop. The loop of string almost immediately becomes a taught circle on the water surface (figure 3). Describe as completely as possible what is happening in this demonstration.
