Español 203: a brief guide to the subjunctive see also pp. 316–322 in Metas Wants and desires: querer, desear, preferir When you want, desire, prefer someone else to do something: Quiero que me acompañes. “I want you to come with me.” Prefiero que saques la basura tú. “I prefer that you take out the trash.” Emotions: tener miedo de que, alegrarse de que, gustarle a uno que, hacerle ilusión a uno que, sentir que etc. No me gusta que salgas con ese chico. “I don’t like you going out with that guy.” Me alegro de que hayas aprobado el examen. “I’m glad you passed the exam.” Me hace mucha ilusión que vengas a visitarnos . “I’m thrilled that you’re coming to visit us.” Doubt, not being sure: dudar, no estar seguro Dudo que sepas ruso. “I doubt that you know Russian.” No estoy seguro de que sea buena idea. “I’m not sure it’s a good idea.” Impersonal expressions, such as: Es necesario que, Es importante que, Es probable que, etc. Es necesario que duermas más.
