10/14/10 Ed Psych - Why should schools care about bystanders? o Witnessing bullies feel unsafe/uneasy in their school o Witnessing bullies negative school climate As a result more school problems/absences o Witnessing bullies reinforce bullies behavior o Witnessing bullies d ecreases distinctiveness (if you are a victim of chronic bullying you will realize you are not the only one) BENEFIT Cliques versus Crowds - Only begins to emerge in adolescence - Cliques: o Groups of between 2-12 individuals (average size is 5-6) of the same age and sex o Usually involved and participate in c ommon activities o Friendship between people in clique o Clique member: person who has most interactions with other members of same clique o Liaisons: not affiliated with a specific group, but bridge the different cliques o Dyads: two people who are separate from everybody else (people who are always together) weird to see one without the other o Isolates: kids who are on their own (loners) don’t want to hangout with
